Water System (Turning Water On)

How to turn the water on through the filters and main line

How to Turn the Water On

Open the filter knobs

Turn the water filter knobs on both filter containers from off to on.

Open the line to the filter system

Open the water line that feeds the filter system.

Slowly open the main water line

Open the main water line slowly. Be ready to turn it back off — along with the individual water filter knobs — if a filter container leaks.

If a filter container leaks

The filter container may need to be tightened, or the O-ring may need to be replaced or adjusted. The filter containers shouldn't be too tight — don't overtighten them.

After the Water Is On — Check Quickly

  1. Check all faucets to make sure they are off.
  2. Check for water leaks — kitchen and bathrooms.

Dishwasher first run

If using the dishwasher, run it during the day the first time, just in case it leaks.

Pressure / Well Tank

The water pressure is maintained by the well tank. The bladder pump was replaced in May 2024.

How it works: the pump fills the tank and compresses the air inside until the pressure switch shuts the pump off. As water is used, pressure drops and the pump kicks back on. This keeps water pressure steady and reduces how often the pump runs. The tank's air pre-charge is normally set about 2 psi below the pump cut-in pressure (e.g., 38 psi for a 40/60 switch) — only a qualified professional should check or adjust it. Don't let the tank freeze.

Water Softener

Plug the water softener in and check whether you need to add more salt.

Water Heater Power

The water heater is powered from the electric panel breakers — turn the water heat on there after the water is running.

Turning the Water Off

When closing up, the water gets turned off downstairs and the pipes drained. See the Winterizing guide for the full shut-down and antifreeze procedure.
