Septic system care and what to avoid

Updated 2026-03-01septic, plumbing, maintenance, systems

How It Works

The cabin uses a private septic system. All wastewater flows from the cabin into an underground tank where solids settle and liquids drain into a leach field. The system is biological — bacteria break down the waste, so it's important not to introduce anything that kills those bacteria.

What Can Go In

  • Human waste and toilet paper
  • Water from sinks, showers, dishwasher, and washing machine
  • Small amounts of mild, biodegradable soap

What Must NOT Go In

Never flush or pour these down the drain

These items can damage the septic system and lead to expensive repairs.

  • Wipes (even "flushable" ones)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Paper towels or tissues
  • Cooking grease or oil
  • Coffee grounds
  • Paint, solvents, or chemicals
  • Bleach in large amounts (small amounts in laundry are OK)
  • Medications

Conservation Tips

Since the septic system has a limited capacity:

  1. Spread out laundry loads over multiple days — don't do 5 loads in one day
  2. Take shorter showers when possible
  3. Run the dishwasher only when full
  4. Fix any running toilets or dripping faucets promptly

Warning Signs

Contact the property manager if you notice any of these:

| Sign | Possible Issue | |------|---------------| | Slow drains throughout the cabin | Tank may be full | | Sewage smell near the tank or yard | Leak or overflow | | Wet, soggy area over the leach field | Field failure | | Gurgling sounds in drains | Blockage or tank full | | Sewage backup in lowest drain | System overloaded |

The septic tank is pumped every 2–3 years. You don't need to worry about this during your visit.
