Snow & Ice Dams

Roof raking, ice dams, and snow care in winter

Before a Winter Visit

Call the plow

Call Rick (cabin check and plow) at 218-200-9420 before arriving in winter to let him know we'll be up.

Roof Raking & Ice Dams

Rake the roof

Using the roof rake, remove snow from the roof to avoid ice dams. You only need to go about 4 ft up.

Clear around the chimney

Remove as much snow as possible around the chimney.

Watch the wires near the chimney

When removing snow in the chimney area, be extra careful not to damage the wires. Use the push broom instead of the roof rake for this area.

Roof Heater

Check the roof heater (heat cable) to make sure it's plugged in when ice dams have formed.

Other Snow Care

  • Shovel snow off the deck.

Don't leave the hall light on

The hall light shouldn't be left on for long periods, especially when there's snow on the roof. The heat from the light creates an ice dam in the middle of the roof.
